Young Adviser Lewis marks World Children’s Day

We’re celebrating World Children’s Day!

To mark the day, Young Adviser Lewis has written a blog about the importance of empowering children to participate in decision-making.

Last month, Lewis co-hosted a webinar with this office and Together. He overcame his nerves to calmly co-ordinate the session in front of a huge audience and was supported by Commissioner Bruce Adamson and his staff.

In the blog, Lewis writes: “While it was daunting, it was a great experience, and it helped me get to know and appreciate myself better. On World Children’s Day, my story shows how good it is when young people are supported and encouraged to meaningfully participate.

“Despite my overwhelming nervousness, I did it. And I did it well.”

World Children’s Day promotes and celebrates children’s rights. Children and young people have made huge sacrifices during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Commissioner has thanked them for all they have done.

In a video, Bruce says: “We’ve been in a pandemic but children and young people have time and time again shown leadership and resilience and that inspires me every single day.

“So I want World Children’s Day to be about celebration and thanks, and about recognising the incredible achievements that they have made.”
